US Government Warns: Islamic Republic May Activate its Terrorist Sleeper Cells

ABC News reported Monday, March 9, that the U.S. government has warned law enforcement agencies in the country that the Islamic Republic may be activating its terrorist sleeper cells outside of Iran. According to the report, the United States has intercepted encrypted communications that are believed to have been sent from Iran and may serve as “an operational trigger” for “sleeper agents” abroad. The alert refers to an initial analysis of signals from a message that “probably originated in Iran” and was broadcast in several countries shortly after the assassination of Ali Khamenei, the former leader of the Islamic Republic. Khamenei was killed early Saturday morning at the start of the Israeli and U.S. strikes on the Islamic Republic. According to ABC News, the intercepted message was encrypted and appeared to be sent to secret recipients and those with the key to decrypt it. Such messages are typically used to transmit orders to covert or sleeper agents without using the internet or mobile networks.
The US government alert said the messages may have been sent “to activate or provide instructions to sleeper cells already stationed outside their home country.”
“While the precise content of these messages cannot be determined at this time, the sudden emergence of a new station with international broadcast capabilities requires heightened security awareness and vigilance,” the alert said.
However, the alert stressed that “no location-specific operational threats” had been identified at this time, but urged law enforcement agencies to increase monitoring of suspicious activity in the radio frequency spectrum.
If the content of the alert is true, it would confirm concerns raised by security officials after the US and Israeli attacks on the Islamic Republic. Officials had expressed concern that sleeper cells based in Western countries could be used by the Islamic Republic for retaliatory action.
